Which one is for you?
- Al-Anon — adults affected by someone else's drinking (and many groups welcome families affected by any drug, not only alcohol).
- Alateen — for teens, usually ages 13–18 (younger in some areas), affected by someone else's drinking. Meetings are guided by adult Al-Anon members certified for Alateen safety; check the locator for current local Alateen groups.
- Nar-Anon — a separate fellowship specifically for families affected by someone else's drug use; see nar-anon.org for its meeting locator.
Your first meeting, in plain terms
- Just show up. No fee, no sign-in with your full name, no commitment to speak.
- You don't have to talk. Newcomers pass in round-the-room sharing all the time.
- Anonymity works both ways. What's said in the room stays in the room — and who you see there is nobody's business outside it.
- It's not about fixing them. The focus is your own coping, boundaries, and recovery, whether or not the person you're worried about ever gets help.
- Try more than one group. Formats differ — step study, topic discussion, newcomers' meetings. Fit matters.
